Michael J. Hillman, a man whose life was as remarkable as his entrance into the world on April 29, 1942, during a bombing raid in London, England, passed away peacefully on November 26, 2023 in Milwaukee, WI. From the moment Michael took his first breath amid the chaos of World War II, he embraced life’s challenges with resilience and vigor.
Michael's indomitable spirit was evident from his early years. His father, a Grenadier Guard, died in the Battle of Monte Cassino when Michael was barely two years old, a hero he would never get the opportunity to meet. Michael’s mother ensured his safety when he was born by relocating the two of them to Scotland until the end of the war.
Upon returning to England, Michael's extraordinary singing talent was discovered; his angelic voice resonated through St. Paul's Cathedral as he sang "On the Wings of a Dove" for the King of England. His performance earned him a place at the prestigious King Edward the 6th Boarding School where he remained until the age of 16. After leaving school Michael's academic prowess and passion for engineering led him to an esteemed 4-year scholarship at Rolls-Royce in London. This program included attendance at the London Polytechnic, later named Westminster University. His dedication and ingenuity were recognized with the first prize silver medal in Automobile Engineering for Small Scale Production.
This was only the beginning of a storied career that would see Michael at the forefront of automotive and motorcycle innovation. Michael's professional journey was marked by significant achievements and contributions to the racing and automotive industries.
His tenure at Brabham Racing Developments culminated as head of the Design Department, where he played an instrumental role in securing four Formula One World Championships. He continued his love of Formula 1 Racing throughout his entire life, with the very last race of the 2023 season taking place the morning of his death.
His expertise was further pursued by Ford of Europe, where he managed the celebrated Escort Mexico engineering program.
In 1973 Michael's adventure continued across the Atlantic, where he assumed the role of Chief Engineer and Team Manager for the UOP Shadow Can-Am Racing Team in Chicago, leading them to a championship in 1974.
His extraordinary talents were further recognized in 1976 when he joined Harley-Davidson. Over the following 10 years Michael assumed responsibility for a series of engineering management positions including Manager/Vehicle Design and Chief Engineer/Advanced Products where he spearheaded the development of the company's first water-cooled engine. He later became Vice President, Contract Operations, revitalizing their contract manufacturing, including 500 lb. bomb casings, drone rocket motors and various other contracts for both government and industry. In 1993 Michael directed the acquisition of 49% of the Buell Motorcycle Company, successfully generating sales from zero to $50 million in four years. As Chairman of the Buell Advisory Board his responsibilities included business plan strategy, dealer network development in the USA, Europe and Japan as well as creating the appropriate manufacturing, sales and marketing infrastructure.
In 1997 Michael decided to take early retirement from Harley-Davidson to pioneer a small chain of self-financed motorcycle-themed stores in the Caribbean, (Bahamas and Grand Cayman). Following the sale of the Caribbean company, Michael continued to consult with Harley-Davidson on such subjects as acquisition evaluation, European product planning and engineering strategy.
Michael's life was enriched by his family, who were the cornerstone of his happiness. He shared a profound bond with his best friend and beloved wife, Jackie, and was a cherished father/step-father to Amanda Carr (Steve), Joanne Newman (Mat), Jonathan Harris (Kristi), and Jenna Haberkorn (Nick).
His nine grandchildren, Sophie, Layla, Harrison, Max, Ozzie, Jack, Reid, Graham, and Henry, all held a very special place in his heart. He was so proud of all of them and loved to share their unique talents and accomplishments. His affection for animals was just as profound, as he embraced every family pet with warmth and tenderness. Despite his intellectual accomplishments, Michael never took himself too seriously. He was known for his sharp wit, and an infectious sense of humor. He always had a special ability to find the humor in the most unexpected places. Whether it was a clever pun or a funny story, Michael could always lighten the mood by making everyone see the silver lining in every situation. His resilience and cheerful disposition remained constant throughout all his many battles with cancer, making him a pillar of strength and hope for all who knew him.
Beyond his professional accolades, Michael served as past President of the Board of Directors of the Wisconsin Parkinson's Association and was a member of the Institute of Directors.
His naturalized U.S. citizenship and residency were a testament to his love and commitment to his adopted country. Michael's life story is one of triumph over adversity, a testament to the power of resilience and the human spirit. Michael's legacy will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him and benefit from his remarkable contributions to the world. His journey may have started under the shadow of war, but his life was a beacon of hope, innovation, and love that will never be extinguished.
