Bernard Edward Merritt Jr.

Ben Merritt, one of the warmest, kindest souls to ever walk the Earth, left us Monday, February 17, 2014, after a brief illness. He leaves behind a family that adores him, but that is comforted by the certainty that his spirit, humor and love for all of us will endure forever. Ben was born on June 22, 1927 to Bernard and Anastasia (nee Chojnacki) Merritt. A natural athlete and a talented artist, Ben was irresistible to his childhood sweetheart who became his wife of over sixty years, Shirley (nee Olenzak) Merritt. Together they had much fun and raised a family of four children. Before his marriage, Ben served his country in World War II as an MP in Paris. He had wonderful stories to share about his experience there. As was classic Ben, he could find beauty and inspiration in even the most difficult of circumstances. Ben was an accomplished artist the family home is full of his work and he enjoyed both the creative aspect and the technical challenges of drawing and painting. He shared his love of art with children and grandchildren, with whom he spent many hours drawing and painting. Ben also loved to golf, and sported a beautiful, fluid swing. Ben enjoyed his time with golfing buddies well into his eighties. Between Ben's artistic bent and Shirley's flair for the dramatic (an actor, her roles included Laura in "A Glass Menagerie" in summer stock theater), family parties were both illustrated and theatrical. The Christmas Spectacular "Ding Dong" Show, which required all participants to perform in a talent show prior to gift opening on Christmas Eve, was an annual happening. Every family birthday party featured poster art by Ben, whether the celebrant was one or ninety years old. Ben was a loving father and grandfather. He would never miss an opportunity to cheer for his kids and grandkids at sporting events or performances. He was always encouraging, always kind, always positive he lived his values and taught those of us around him to rise above and find our best selves. His light continues to shine in those who love him: his beautiful wife Shirley, his children David (Cheryl), Susan, Jane (Trix) and Laura Acuff (John); grandchildren Sarah and Kyle Acuff, Sienna and Sage Kossman and Eliza Merritt; sister Joan and brother Jim, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Alice Mangan, and dear friends Dorothy (nee Olenzak) and Peter Schwei. Visitation at the Max A. Sass and Sons Funeral Home on Saturday, February 22, 2013 from 1 PM until the time of service at 3 PM. Entombment will be private at St. Adalbert Cemetery.
