Bruce F. Stevlingson, 86, of Brookfield, Wisconsin, died on Saturday, August 15, 2026. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen (nee Hilton), sons Daniel and Peter Stevlingson, grandsons Nathan and Noah Stevlingson, brother H. J. Stevlingson, Jr., and sister Rosemary Edlund. Bruce was preceded in death by his father, H.J Stevlingson Sr., his mother, Marie Stevlingson (née) Keating, his sister Patricia, and his brothers Donald and John Stevlingson.

He was born in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, because there was no hospital in the tiny city of Westby, 30 miles away, where his family lived and worked in his grandfather’s General Store.

During his marriage of 62 years, he was a loving and dependable source of support to his sons, daughter-in-law, Heather, and grandsons, an enthusiastic cheerleader of their efforts on both baseball, basketball, and soccer fields.

While expecting his first child, he and his National Guard unit provided a traveling “grocery store” of bread and milk to the inner city during Milwaukee’s race riot in the 60’s. And as part of a city rec program, he chaperoned bus loads of inner city kids on day trips to nearby national parks, took a local scout trip on a camping trip up north, and volunteered as a leader of our sons Cub Scout troop.

Bruce also got to “ham it up” as a Bingo caller raising funds for our children’s Catholic School, Sacred Heart Church, in St Francis.

In the 70’s, he was loaned out to United Way’s yearly fundraising campaign by his company, which led to his photo with a cute little disabled child being on the sides of Milwaukee buses during the campaign. During that same period he took a night shift job, which was problematic in our Bay View neighborhood. During those pre-iPhone days, children contacted their friends by standing under the window and hollering “Call for Peeterr!”

Much of Bruce’s free time back then, was taken up renovating our 70 year old duplex, which included blowing insulation under our attic floor. Unfortunately, some of it made its way down the clothes chutes, to our tenants chagrin.

Later in life, as a prostate cancer survivor, he was invited to Washington D.C., to serve on a National Health Association Commitee. Medical personnel made up 3/4 of the commitee, the rest were patients/survivors. Their group was tasked with looking at proposals for grants to research new medicines/treatments for prostate cancer and rate them from a patients point of view. Little did he know that he would die of a completely different form of cancer.

Even when Bruce was near the end, his sense of humor managed to pop up. surrounded by the hospital’s oncologist, gerontologist, and nurse….he was asked “ Bruce, where are you!” “On Planet Earth!” He answered. Laughter ensued!
