Carol Mary Baker, better known as “Granny”, a beacon of love and faith, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on August 7, 2025, at the age of 86. Born on January 4, 1939, Carol's life was a tapestry of devotion to her family, her faith, and her community. She leaves behind a legacy of warmth, compassion, and creativity that will be cherished by all who knew her.
Carol's journey began as the cherished daughter of her late parents, Sally and Stanley Sulkowski, and grew as she met and married the love of her life, Edward Baker Jr. Their union was a testament to enduring love, flourishing over 68 cherished years. Together, they created a family that became Carol's pride and joy. She was a loving mother to Mary Ann (Frank) Rozman, Mark (Cheryl) Baker, and JoAnn (Donny) Sparks. Her life was further enriched by the blessings of her grandchildren, including Stephanie (Jason) Karwedsky, Megan (Kyle) LeDoux, Kyle (Sara) Compton, Steven (Megan) Baker, Matt (Samantha Serrano) Compton, A.J. (Heather Berg) Compton, Sarah (Shaine) Meyers and Alex (Tyler) Du Bois, and the joy of her great-grandchildren, Logan, Charlotte, Vivienne, Jackson, Lylah, Brooklyn, Watson, and Wesley. Carol's family circle included her loving sister, Barbara (Robert) Shaefer, and her dear sister-in-law, Becky (Bob) Glesne, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a bunch of friends. Carol was preceded in death by her son, Joseph Baker, and her brother, Eugene Sulkowski, whom she now joins in eternal rest.
Carol's professional life mirrored her nurturing spirit. As owner, along with her partner and friend, Jan Krueger of Hearthside Quilters Nook in Hales Corners, WI, she fostered a community of creativity and camaraderie. Her passion for quilting was not only a hobby but a way to connect with others, sharing stories and laughter over stitches and patterns. Carol also served as a librarian aide at elementary schools in Milwaukee and East Troy, where she instilled the love of reading in countless young minds.
A devout Christian, Carol's faith was the cornerstone of her existence. It guided her through life's challenges and was a source of comfort and strength to her and those around her. Her faith-filled life was evident in her kindness and the way she lived out her beliefs through acts of service and love.
Carol's interests were a reflection of her appreciation for life's simple beauties. She had an eye for the delicate intricacies of flowers, with a particular admiration for pansies, which mirrored her ability to see beauty in the everyday. Most of all, Carol cherished spending time with her family, creating memories that will be treasured for generations.
Those who knew Carol will remember her as loving, faith-filled, and passionate. She approached every day with a heart full of gratitude and a desire to make a positive impact on the world around her. Her warmth touched many, and her absence will be deeply felt. Carol Mary Baker's life was a beautiful quilt of experiences, relationships, and love—a masterpiece that will continue to provide comfort and inspiration. As we say farewell, we celebrate the remarkable woman she was and the extraordinary life she led. May she rest in peace, surrounded by the love she so freely gave during her time on earth.
The family would like to share their extreme gratitude to St. Croix Hospice RN Brittany Perez for all her loving care.
