Obituary

Listen to Obituary

Eugene “Skip” Schopper was born on September 7, 1931, in Athens, Wisconsin, to August and Clara Schopper. He passed away peacefully on October 22, 2026, at the age of 95. Skip was reunited with Janet “Jan,” his beloved wife of 63 years.

He was a loving father to Cynthia Schopper, Catherine (Steven) Zmudzinski, Charles Schopper, Carolyn (Zaid) Ouhri, Cheryl (Todd) Schultz, Christine (Scott) Hauck, and Curtis (Jennifer) Schopper. He was the proud grandfather of 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren, who brought him much joy. Skip was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jan; his parents, August and Clara Schopper; his siblings, Harold Schopper, Marlyn Schopper, and Phyllis Dassow; and his grandson, Zachariah Ouhri.

Skip grew up in Rib Lake, Wisconsin, and attended UW-Eau Claire for one year before enlisting in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. He proudly served for four years as a hospital corpsman, stationed in Jacksonville, Florida, and later with the Marines at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. During his military service, Skip met the love of his life, Jan, on a Greyhound bus while traveling home on leave in 1952. The two became engaged in February 1955 and married in October of that year. Skip received an honorable discharge from the Navy in August 1954.

Together, Skip and Jan built a beautiful life centered on family, raising seven wonderful children whom Skip affectionately referred to as “The 7 C’s.” He continued his education and graduated from Marquette University in 1958 with a degree in business. He went on to build his career as a tax accountant.

Faith was an important part of Skip’s life. On January 22, 1983, he was ordained as a permanent deacon in the Catholic Church. He faithfully served at St. Leonard Catholic Parish in Muskego for many years, sharing his faith and offering support to his parish community.

Following retirement, Skip and Jan enjoyed spending their winters in Arizona before eventually returning to Wisconsin full-time. They spent their later years at The Regency in Muskego, where they continued to enjoy life together. Wherever they went, Skip and Jan had a special way of making connections, forming lasting friendships and leaving a warm impression on the people they met.

The family would like to thank Robyn and all the staff at the Regency, Muskego for their dedicated service and care of Skip through the years, a special thanks to Colleen and the Oak Medical team, and Rachel and the Brighton Hospice staff for your attention and care of Skip during his final weeks with us.

Visitation will be held at St. Leonard Catholic Church, W173 S7743 Westwood Dr., Muskego, on Thursday, November 19th from 9:30–10:45 AM, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM. Private family interment will take place at Mount Olivet Cemetery.
