Gary Szymanski, age 75, of Milwaukee, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 7, 2026. Born on August 23, 1950, to the late Max and Esther (Brenner) Szymanski. Gary lived a full and unforgettable life marked by service, humor, generosity, and a deep love for family and friends.
Gary married the love of his life, Barbara, on March 24, 1984. The two celebrated their marriage with a honeymoon in Arizona, arriving just in time to enjoy Milwaukee Brewers spring training.
Gary proudly served as a Detective with the Milwaukee Police Department until his retirement, building a colorful and respected career filled with stories few could match. He was known for his quick wit, sarcastic sense of humor, and ability to make people laugh wherever he went.
A true Wisconsin sports fan, Gary especially loved cheering on the Brewers and Packers. He was also an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time at his cabin in Winter, Wisconsin. Gary loved playing poker, smoking his pipe, attending concerts and sporting events, and keeping busy outdoors with yard work. He was the kind of neighbor everyone appreciated. Gary was always ready to lend a hand, especially when it came to clearing snow from sidewalks for others. Above all, Gary will be remembered as caring, hilarious, giving, and fiercely devoted to those he loved.
He is lovingly survived by his wife, Barbara; his son, Gary Michael (Katie) Szymanski; his step-son, Brad (Cheri) Blum; several cherished grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and many other relatives and friends. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Max and Esther; his daughter, Jenny White; and his step-son, Kevin Blum.
Visitation will be held at Max A. Sass & Sons Greenridge Chapel on Saturday, May 30, 2026, from 10:00 AM until the 11:00 AM funeral service. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation in Gary's name to Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
