James “Jim” Duerst passed away peacefully at home on November 5, 2025, at the age of 85. Beloved husband of Aletha Duerst for 62 years with children Wendy (Bill) Roeber, Todd (Kay) Duerst, and Nancy Duerst (Jon Emmer). Proud grandpa of Nicholas (Molly) Willgrubs, Matthew (Jenna) Roeber, Trenton Roeber (Christopher Lucas), Leandra (Mackenzie) Damewood, Jakob Willgrubs, and Marina (Carson) Bigham. Cherished great grandpa of Brae and Rue Willgrubs. Dear brother of Judy (Tom) Stuessy. Further survived by loved nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Preceded in death by his parents Lydia and Jacob Duerst and sisters Virginia Babler and Betty Engen.
Jim was a caring man who deeply loved his family and dogs and was especially devoted to his wife Aletha. As dad often said throughout his life, “my wife is the most beautiful woman around”. During his recent decline, he ended his visits with family members with an “I love you” declaration and kissed his wife each and every time.
Jim watched and played many sports and was a fierce Euchre player. He enjoyed listening to country music and playing his vinyl on Sunday mornings.
A Memorial Gathering will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Faith Community (S89 W22650 Milwaukee Ave., Big Bend) on Saturday, November 22nd from 10:30AM-11:45AM with the Memorial Service to follow at 12:00PM. Lunch to follow service.
