John Lewis Thornton passed peacefully on April 4, 2026, at the Milwaukee, VA Medical Center. At the time of his death he was 90 years of age.

John was a long time resident of Wauwatosa, WI, and worked for years as a housing inspector for the U.S. Government. He was also a Sunday School teacher, and usher at his church St. Vincent Pallotti. John was known for his quick wit, engaging manner and a thorough, detailed approach to his work. John was proud of his service in the U.S. Navy and often told rousing stories of that time.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the late Elva Ann. He is survived by a son and daughter, Mark Thornton of Wauwatosa, WI and Jennifer Swanson of Minneapolis, MN, three grandchildren, Noah, Zoe and Olivia Swanson as well as his sister, Jean Norton of Lynchburg, VA, brothers William Thornton of Hutto, TX, Michael Thornton of Mt. Prospect, IL. His brothers, Robert, James, and his sister Mary Thornton Pfleger, preceded John in death.

In accordance with John’s wishes, there will be no memorial or funeral services held.
