Mary Beatrice Hansen, lovingly known as “Mary B,” “Queen B,” “Mother Mare,” “Grandma Mare,” and “Lucy,” passed away peacefully on May 4, 2026, at the age of 71.
Mary was born and raised in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. After marrying the love of her life, Rick, the two built their home and raised their family in Greenfield, where Mary created a life centered on family, community, and generosity. She was Rick's devoted wife for 53 years. Early in their marriage, Mary and Rick spent many cherished weekends traveling to Norway, Michigan, to be with Rick’s family, as well as time spent up north with her sister Claudia and brother-in-law Roger—memories that remained close to her heart throughout her life.
In the last two years of Mary’s life, Rick showed extraordinary devotion and love, caring for her around the clock. He faithfully brought her to countless doctor appointments and dialysis treatments, stayed by her side through many hospital visits, and was a constant source of strength and comfort every day.
Mary was a proud and loving mother to her two sons, Danny (Kim) and Andy (Mindy), and an adoring grandmother to Kayla, Tyler, Abigail, Ashlyn, Hayden, and Camden. Her grandchildren were her greatest joy, and she was their biggest supporter, attending their sporting events, caring for them, and celebrating every milestone. She also leaves behind her beloved dog, Freddy, who was always by her side, even till the very end.
Mary worked at Harwood Medical Clinics before becoming a dedicated homemaker while raising her boys. Once they were in school, she returned to work at Edgewood Elementary School, where her kindness and care touched many lives. She also gave countless volunteer hours to the Greenfield Little League and the Greenfield High School Booster Club, always showing up to support her community.
Mary was known for her signature headbands, her selfless spirit, and her unwavering dedication to others. She had a special love for her family’s annual trips up north for deer hunting season, where she took pride in cooking for everyone, helping with the butchering, and carefully recording each hunt's success. She also found great joy in writing her yearly Christmas letter, a tradition that kept family and friends connected and up to date on the lives she loved so dearly.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents, Elizabeth and Ralph Schmid; her brother, Ralph Schmid; and her sister, Claudia Koerner.
Her life was defined by love, service, and devotion to those around her. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Enjoy your golden bandana, we know you will wear it proudly.
Visitation will be held at MAX A. SASS & SONS GREENRIDGE CHAPEL (4747 S 60th St., Greenfield) on Saturday, June 13, 2026, from 11:00 AM until the 1:00 PM celebration of life.
