Shirley Steffes Lemon, age 89, of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2026, surrounded by all those who loved her.
Born on November 14, 1936, in Milwaukee, WI. She was the daughter of Joseph Anthony Steffes and Florence Elm Steffes. Shirley’s greatest love was making everyone feel loved, with many others who called her mom. She was known to all as the one who wouldn’t let you go hungry, or if an item needed mending or sewing, she was on it. Shirley was patient, nurturing, and loved to teach. Most importantly, she loved all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. There is not one grandchild who didn’t feel her touch at some point in their lives.
Shirley was a member of the Oneida Nation, a homemaker who loved to sew as her hobby, and later you would find her sewing dresses for weddings. Shirley will be remembered for her love of avid walking and dancing, especially as a smoke dancer in her younger years.
Shirley was a loving mother to her children; she is survived by Pauline Lising (Manny), Gregory Gavino Lemon (Mary), Noren Phil Lemon, Kevin James Lemon (Nelly), Denise Elizabeth Lemon (MoMo), Alicia Estella Greendeer Dollison (Scott), and Deanna Florence Greendeer (Frank), 24 grandkids, and 37 great-grandkids; siblings that she is survived by are Yevonne (Steffes) Doxtator, Kathleen (Steffes) Garcia, Doris (Steffes) Roddy, Robert Steffes and Joseph Steffes.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Dominick Lemon, then common-law husband Frederick Greendeer; her parents Joseph & Florence Steffes; her children Anthony Joseph Lemon and Albert Lee Lemon; and siblings Mildred (Steffes) Varnes, Ruth (Steffes) Buffalo, Esther (Steffes) Boucher-Roddy, Leo Steffes, Excilda (Steffes) Hutchinson, Cecelia(Steffes) Krawczyk, Delores (Steffes) Lemon, Kenneth Steffes, Herbert Steffes, and Sandra (Steffes) Morales.
The family will receive family and friends in Jacksonville, Florida, with her final resting place in Wood National Cemetery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
