Susan M. Black

Susan Black, age 79, of Big Bend, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 9, 2026. Born on October 31, 1946, in Milwaukee to the late Andrew Sommers and Mildred Manske, Susan lived a life full of dedication, laughter, and love for her family and beloved dogs.

Susan proudly served with the Milwaukee Police Department for 25 years before retiring. She made history as the department’s first female K-9 officer, beginning her groundbreaking work alongside her loyal partner, Quanto. Her passion for animals remained a defining part of her life, and those who knew her often joked that she may have loved her dogs even more than her children.

Outside of her career, Susan enjoyed playing bingo, the Jim Beam Bottle Club, and spending time with family and friends. She was the foundation and glue of her family — caring, dependable, and always ready with a sharp wit and great sense of humor that could brighten any room.

Susan will be deeply missed by her children, James A. Black, Daniel (Julie) Black, and Debra (Ted) Puente; her partner, James W. Black; her grandchildren, Patrick, Sarah (Ron), Michael, Brian, and John; and her great-grandchildren, David, Abigail, Paige, Karlee, Paisley, Clover, and Zyler. She is further survived by her brother, Larry Liukonen; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her siblings, Gary Sommers, Roberta Sommers, Dennis Sommers, and Harvey Liukonen.

Visitation will be held at Max A. Sass & Sons Westwood Chapel (W173 S7629 Westwood Dr., Muskego) on Saturday, May 16, 2026, from 11:30 AM until the 1:00 PM funeral service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Susan’s honor may be made to the Humane Society.
